Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra is facing significant backlash on social media. His recent comments about influencer culture at the Indian International Film Festival (IFFI) sparked widespread criticism. Users online are now challenging his perspective.
Chopra, known for acclaimed films like “12th Fail” and his outspoken nature, directed harsh words at influencers. He questioned the value of their large online followings.
“They go on the net and stand like this and get 5 million followers,” Chopra stated. “They stand like that and get 10 million followers. They think they are the boss.”
He continued, criticizing the business model. “Then brands go to these people and ask them to sell their product. What is this nonsense going on?”
Chopra concluded his remarks by urging a choice between pursuing social media fame and seeking genuine happiness and joy. He emphasized that individuals must decide for themselves.
Social media users and influencers quickly responded, disagreeing with the filmmaker’s views. Many are directly trolling Chopra.
Several users highlighted that even film industry casting directors inquire about an individual’s social media follower count. This suggests the industry itself contributes to the trend Chopra criticized.
Some online commentators believe Chopra’s frustration stems from ordinary individuals achieving celebrity status. Others have simply labeled his comments as a sign of his own exasperation.

Chopra’s last feature film, “12th Fail,” was released in 2023 and received critical acclaim. He also produced a documentary titled “Zero Se Restart” about its making last year.
