The film ‘Haq,’ starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, has received significant legal clearance for its release. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a petition that sought to halt the film’s theatrical debut.
The movie is now confirmed to be released as scheduled on November 7.
The lawsuit was filed by Siddiqa Begum, who is the daughter of Shah Bano, the woman whose life and legal battle reportedly inspired the film. Begum contended that the filmmakers lacked the authority to create such a film without the consent of Shah Bano’s family or legal heirs.
The Indore bench of the High Court, however, rejected these arguments presented by the petitioner.
The court explicitly stated that “any privacy or reputation acquired by a person during their lifetime ceases with their death.” It further clarified that these rights “cannot be inherited like movable or immovable property.”
The court also accepted the filmmakers’ assertion that ‘Haq’ is merely inspired by the historical case. The movie’s disclaimer clearly states that the narrative is a work of fiction.
Directed by Suparn S Verma, ‘Haq’ is inspired by the landmark Mohammed Ahmed Khan versus Shah Bano Begum case. This significant Supreme Court ruling established the right to maintenance for divorced Muslim women.
