The money handed out by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, which gives a hefty 1.5 crore rupees to producers, isn’t really getting the job done. In fact, he suggested they should probably dial back the amount.

Thampi Backs Gopalakrishnan’s Stance

He pointed out that the 1.5 crore rupees provided by the state government for film production isn’t showing the desired outcomes. He even suggested that it might be time to reduce this financial aid. While many were quick to criticize his view, Sreekumaran Thampi, a veteran Malayalam poet, lyricist, and filmmaker, made it clear he agreed.

Thampi wasted no time in defending Gopalakrishnan. He emphasized Gopalakrishnan’s status as a filmmaking legend. Then, he directly challenged the critics of Gopalakrishnan’s recent statements. “What exactly is wrong with his comments?” Thampi questioned. He highlighted that the government offers 1.5 crore rupees to encourage filmmakers from marginalized communities. “This is public money,” Thampi stressed.
“Suggesting Training Isn’t Unreasonable”
Thampi went on to argue that it’s perfectly reasonable to suggest that eligibility should be checked before such large sums are given out. He pondered aloud, “We can’t just hand out public money without thought.” He then posed another important question: “What’s wrong with saying that funds should only be given after filmmakers receive the necessary training?” Thampi also clarified a key point: Gopalakrishnan never mentioned specific groups like women or Dalit filmmakers. He simply said that anyone getting government grants should have enough knowledge about making movies. He quoted Gopalakrishnan: “A camera is not a toy.” This statement underscores the seriousness and skill required for filmmaking, regardless of who is behind the lens.
