The global world of football is buzzing, but not always with joy. Sometimes, it’s a roar of protest. That’s exactly the sound coming from FIFPro, the worldwide union for professional footballers. They’ve launched a sharp attack on FIFA and its big boss, Gianni Infantino. Their main complaint? The Club World Cup and the brutal toll it takes on players.
It seems FIFPro believes Infantino has gotten a bit too comfortable in his role. Sergio Marchi, the head of FIFPro, didn’t hold back. He said Infantino acts like “a man who thinks he is God.” Marchi argued that the Club World Cup is hiding a dangerous truth. It’s pulling away from what daily life is like for footballers around the world.

One major problem causing all the noise was the extreme heat during Club World Cup games. Players protested loudly about it. Marchi stated clearly that playing in such “unacceptable temperatures” put players’ health at risk. He called it a serious issue. He also warned that this situation absolutely cannot happen again at next year’s main World Cup.
The players’ union had been pushing for a full month of vacation for players. But guess what? That was cut short to just three weeks because of the Club World Cup. It’s a tough break for athletes who put their bodies on the line day in and day out.
Marchi really leaned into some strong comparisons. He likened Infantino and FIFA to “Nero’s Rome.” He called the whole setup a “global spectacle.” He said it was just like the “bread and circuses” from ancient Rome. Back then, leaders kept the public happy with free food and shows, distracting them from real problems.
Marchi claims FIFA keeps making more and more money. But he points out that this profit comes at the expense of the very people who make the game exciting: the players. He made a powerful statement: “No spectacle is possible if the players’ voice is ignored.” For him, it’s past time that footballers are truly put at the center of the game they play. Their well-being, their voices, and their limits should matter most.
