Why the German team in dispute?

Qatari soccer fans hit back, displaying photos of former German player Mesut Ozil and wearing bandages to protest against Germany during their match against Spain. A group of Qatari fans arrived at the stadium here on Sunday with pictures of Ozil. The fans coordinated well to oppose Germany. The protest is believed to have been against the attitude taken by the German players on Wednesday. The German players then covered their mouths in protest of a ban on wearing ‘One Love’ armbands by FIFA, world soccer’s governing body.

The people of Qatar came out in support of Ozil

Some teams in Europe had planned to wear ‘One Love’ armbands in protest of Qatar’s human rights record, but FIFA put an end to their plans. Qatari fans protested against Germany on Sunday over the alleged stepmother treatment inflicted on Özil. Ozil faced racial slurs following Germany’s early exit from the 2018 World Cup, after which the star player resigned from the national team.

Ozil is a player born in Germany and of Turkish origin. He accused the German soccer federation, fans and the media of racially treating him. Ozil later said: “When we win, I am German, but when we lose, I become an immigrant.”
