FIFA Accused of Unilateral Imposition of International Match Calendar
The European Leagues and the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO) have filed a joint complaint against FIFA with the European Commission, citing the "unilateral imposition" of the international match calendar.
Oversaturated and Unsustainable Match Calendar
The joint statement issued by both entities claims that the current international match calendar is "oversaturated and unsustainable" for national leagues and the health of players. The decision-making process, which has favored FIFA’s own competitions and commercial interests, has been criticized.
Lack of Involvement in Decision-Making Process
The European Leagues and FIFPRO protest that FIFA has consistently refused to include national leagues and players’ unions in the decision-making process, instead making decisions unilaterally. This lack of involvement has led to opposition from the two organizations.
Joint Complaint with LaLiga
This complaint joins a separate court case initiated by the footballers’ unions of England, France, and Italy in June, and will argue that the match calendar violates European Union (EU) Competition Law and constitutes an abuse of a dominant position.
Collaboration with European Commission
The European Leagues and FIFPRO have informed the European Commission of their decision and will work closely with the Commission, public institutions, and stakeholders throughout the investigation process.
