FIFA organizes Tuesday and Thursday video conferences to collect the "point of view" of the selectors of the men’s national teams on the reform of the international calendar, in particular on the hypothesis of a biennial World Cup, the organization reported on Monday.
The items on the agenda will be "the health of the players, the periods of international matches, the frequency of the FIFA World Cup, among others", said the governing body of world football in a statement.
"The point of view of the national men’s team coaches is very important"says Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s director of world football development, in the text. "We do not often have the opportunity to meet to exchange views. We therefore have to seize the opportunity to dialogue when it occurs. It is the best way for us to protect the place that football occupies in the world and to make our sport truly global.".
The former Arsenal manager wants to start a national team competition every year, alternating World Cup and continental competitions, regrouping the qualifications only in the month of October, or in October and March. A full report must be published by FIFA in November, before a "global summit" between now and the end of the year.
The idea of a World Cup organized every two years starting in 2028 is firmly rejected by UEFA and fan groups.
