FIFA May Change 2030 World Cup Host Cities in Spain Unilaterally

The fate of the 2030 World Cup hangs in the balance. Portugal, Spain, and Morocco are set to host the tournament, but a confidential document reveals that FIFA has the power to unilaterally change the host cities.
The three countries will submit their proposals, but FIFA will have the final say. Spain plans to use 11 stadiums across nine cities, with Barcelona and Madrid each hosting games in two stadiums.
However, one stadium in Madrid, the Metropolitano, home of Atlético Madrid, is causing some concern. The club is weighing its options: rent out the stadium to FIFA for two months or use it for more lucrative concerts and events.
This uncertainty has thrown two other cities into the mix: Vigo and Valencia. If Atlético Madrid backs out, Valencia is likely to take its place. Vigo would be a backup option if another city drops out.
Meanwhile, Málaga’s La Rosaleda stadium needs an upgrade to meet FIFA’s 40,000-seat requirement. Local officials are confident they can get it done in time.
In Portugal, the stadiums in Lisbon, Porto, and Alvalade are set to host World Cup games.
