Fernando Tatis Jr. begins to do “test swings”

It’s something Padres fans have been waiting for months: Fernando Tatis Jr. with a bat in hand.

However, it is not what everyone expects.

The Padres’ Dominican star has not yet been cleared to take batting practice; the most important remaining step before he can return to action after fracturing his left wrist during the offseason. But Tatis is already swinging. That became clear Tuesday, when Tatis was seen in the inside batter’s box at Petco Park.

The video of the Quisqueyan making swings quickly reached social networks. Fans can view the batter’s box from a walkway leading to the stadium seats.

But what exactly is going on? San Diego interim manager Ryan Christenson explained that it’s about the recovery process.

“They are test swings. We want to see how much she has procreated,” Christenson said. “I know he hasn’t been cleared to progress with his swings – hitting balls, hitting the tee or hitting any balls coming his way. As far as I know, it was a couple of dry swings, to start to get the rhythm and see where to go.

Christenson said Tatis does not have any MRIs scheduled during the team’s current stay at home.
