The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso will continue in Formula 1 until December 2022 in the Alpine team, as announced this Thursday by the team that is owned by the Renault group.
“The renewal of Fernando Alonso marks the continuity and a strong collaboration after a first historic performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in which he played a central role. He is as fast as ever and he gets a lot out of the car,” Alpine reported in a statement published on its website and on its social networks.
The 40-year-old Spanish rider has won two World Champion titles, in 2005 and 2006, and a total of 32 victories, 22 pole positions, 23 fastest laps and 97 podiums.
In the current season he ranks eleventh in the championship with 38 points, managing to finish eight races in the top 10, with fourth place in the Hungarian GP as the best classification, a race that was won by his teammate, Esteban Ocon.
“We are delighted to confirm Fernando’s presence with Esteban next year,” said Alpine’s chief executive officer, Laurent Rossi. “For us it is a perfect duo, among the best on the grid. They work in an extremely complementary way offering both raw talent and speed, but also a team spirit that is at the origin of our first success in Hungary”, explained Rossi .
Alonso, meanwhile, expressed his satisfaction for the continuity in Alpine, where he says he feels at home and appreciated having been received “with open arms” on his return to the team. “It is a pleasure to work with some of the most brilliant professionals in the competition who are in this team. We have shown good progress collectively,” explained the Spaniard.
