Ferdinand, about De Gea: “I am devastated by how the club has handled this”

Hours go by and David de Gea’s situation remains unresolved. The swerve of Manchester United in the negotiations for his renewal has left the club and player with no margin, and that is that on July 1 the still goalkeeper of the Red Devils will be a free agent. A situation that, just as it was criticized days ago in the English press, has also caused both confusion and discontent in the club’s environment. On the YouTube channel FIVEthe legend of the Mancunian team Rio Ferdinand has expressed his opinion on the “curious” situation that David de Gea is going through, in which, in the opinion of the former English soccer player, “Manchester United have to learn from this.”.

The man from Madrid has become an institution of the English club after more than a decade at Old Trafford, beyond his performance: “He has been an unreal servant for this football club. He has been at this club for 12 years, the same as me. He’s been player of the year four or five times in that time.. He has never brought an ounce of trouble to the club, he never discredited it. He has sometimes been the best player at the club and, in some of those years, he had moments when he didn’t do well. He lost his shape a bit. He may have lost confidence, but overall he served the club extraordinarily well. He is an exceptional professional and a great person”.

That is why, although Rio Ferdinand affirms that “it is understandable and fair” that there are many people “asking him to leave, who want to go find a new goalkeeper and evolve that position”, David de Gea is still a Manchester United legend, but he is not receiving a treatment to match.

Although the Dutch coach has shown in numerous press appearances his wish that the Spaniard continue to be linked to the discipline Red Devil, Rio Ferdinand explains that “Erik ten Hag, after all, has a certain type of goalkeeper who wants to and, if David de Gea is not that goalkeeper, then (David De Gea) has to put up his hands and say: ‘You know what, I’ve had a great career here, I love it here, but if the manager doesn’t like me, I’ll I have to go or I’m going to be number 2.”

In Erik ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, the Spaniard has been a fixture under the sticks: 58 games (all starters) among all competitionsthe campaign with the most games since he arrived in Manchester and of his entire career.

Suitable or not for the style of play of the new Manchester United, andhe historic English player of the Red Devils recognizes in FIVE be “a bit devastated by how the club has handled this”, since in the Old Trafford club “they have made mistakes in the past” with the departure of great players: “It is a matter of communication. I think Manchester United have to learn from this. Great players have left the club with the feeling that they have not been treated well. Nobody has the divine right to leave a club in their own way, but you want your players, especially those who have been there for a long time and have served the club well, to leave with a good taste in their mouths. They will be disappointed to leave the club, because nobody wants to leave the club they love, but I see more and more players leaving with a bitter taste, and that’s not right. I don’t think it’s fair to the player.”

In addition, Rio Ferdinand finds in the situation of David De Gea a problem that is difficult to solve. The former English player wonders: “how is David de Gea now?”. Although he has been on the side for 12 years Red Devil Manchester, the Spanish goalkeeper will have conditioned the vision and attitude of and towards the club after what happened in his last year of contract. “David (de Gea) must be sitting there and thinking: ‘I never dreamed that I would leave the club this way, this way'”.

For the historic central defender of the Mancunian team, “the only way for him to stay is if Manchester United cannot sign André Onana, or whatever goalkeeper. However, it would be difficult for him because he would be looking at the club in a different light.. Before it was love, now it may be business. It’s disappointing and I hope it gets resolved, for the good of David (de Gea) and the club”.
