Local News

A 59-year-old doctor was taken into custody on Tuesday night following a physical altercation with a police officer in the Ituzaingó neighborhood of Montevideo.

Incident Report

According to eyewitnesses, police officers were called to a residence owned by José Shaw and Serafín José García after a woman, the daughter of a man who had recently taken his own life, collapsed. Upon arrival, the officers requested medical assistance for the woman.

Verbal Exchange

When the doctor, who is employed by a private health insurance company, arrived at the scene, a police officer allegedly referred to the woman as "female." The doctor took offense to this terminology, which is commonly used in police jargon, and asked the officer to speak to her nicely, emphasizing that she is a woman.

The exchange escalated into an argument, culminating in the doctor spitting on the police officer and attempting to strike him. She was subsequently arrested and refused to provide identification.

Previous Run-Ins with Law Enforcement

Despite having no prior criminal record, the doctor has been involved in several police investigations related to threats.
