A wave of sadness swept through the football community on Tuesday. Jorge Costa, a name synonymous with grit and glory, passed away suddenly at 53. The former captain of FC Porto and a national team hero was, at the time of his passing, working as a director for professional football at his beloved club.

Led by Fernando Gomes, the committee highlighted Costa’s “legacy of passion and dedication to the sport.” They shared heartfelt condolences with his family and friends. This sentiment extended to the Portuguese Football Federation, FC Porto, and every other club where he left his mark. The COP emphasized that Costa earned the respect and admiration of both teammates and opponents throughout his career.

A Career Forged in Fire

Jorge Costa’s playing days were legendary. He wore the blue and white of FC Porto’s ‘Dragons’ in 383 official matches between 1992 and 2005. For many seasons, he proudly wore the captain’s armband, leading his team with an iron will. His trophy cabinet was overflowing. He lifted one Champions League trophy, one UEFA Cup, and one Intercontinental Cup. On the national stage, he celebrated eight league titles, five Portuguese Cups, and five Super Cups.

Beyond his club success, Costa also served his country with distinction. He earned 50 caps for the senior Portuguese national team. His talents were recognized early; he was part of the squad that won the U-20 World Cup in 1991.

Details emerged about his sudden passing. A source from São João Hospital told the Lusa news agency that Jorge Costa entered cardiorespiratory arrest in the emergency room. He had been transported there after feeling unwell at FC Porto’s training center, located in Olival, Vila Nova de Gaia. The football world mourns the loss of a true competitor and dedicated servant of the game.
