The football world in Porto is in mourning. A true giant of the game, Jorge Costa, passed away on Tuesday afternoon in the city. His legacy at FC Porto runs deep, etched into the club’s history. Now, there’s talk of a special way to honor him, one that would cement his place forever.
António Tavares, who heads the General Assembly Board at FC Porto, openly discussed the idea. He suggested that the number 2 jersey, famously worn by Costa, could be retired. This move would be a lasting tribute to the club legend.
Tavares shared his thoughts with RTP, a local broadcaster. He explained that the number 2 holds unique importance for the club. “It’s clear that the number 2 has its own, very specific weight,” he said. He believes that if FC Porto were to retire it, “it would be a beautiful and very interesting act.”
While Tavares sees the value in such a gesture, he noted it’s not his role to make the official proposal. That decision rests with the club’s main board. However, he is confident that the club’s vast fan base would fully support it. “I am sure that FC Porto’s more than 100,000 members would have no difficulty subscribing to an attitude of this kind,” he added. This support would come, of course, “if the club’s Board so understands.”
Retiring a jersey number is a powerful symbol in sports. It shows deep respect for a player who gave everything to the team. For Jorge Costa, Tavares believes it would be the perfect way to keep his memory alive. “It would be a beautiful and just way to perpetuate Jorge Costa’s memory,” he stated. It seems the club and its supporters are ready to honor one of their greatest heroes in a truly special way.
