They took a commanding 23-8 lead into halftime.
In the second half, FC Porto eased off, managing the game and securing a 37-21 victory.
Antonio Martinez led the charge with eight goals in the first half alone.
Three players were tied for top scorer with nine goals each: Hugo Costa (Avanca), Ricardo Brandão, and Antonio Martinez (FC Porto).
The second leg matches are scheduled for this Sunday.
The games will be played at 4:00 PM in Braga and 6:00 PM in Avanca.
