Farense, a professional second-tier club, defeated district league opponent Silves 5-1 on Sunday to advance to the last 16 of the Portuguese Cup, overcoming an early scare from the amateur side.
The decisive victory saw Rui Costa and Darío Poveda each score two goals for Farense at Estádio de São Luís in Faro. Franco Romero added a fifth goal in the final minutes.
Silves, the sole representative from the district leagues remaining in the fourth round, briefly equalized just before halftime through Mateus Vieira.
Farense then asserted their dominance with two quick goals early in the second half, solidifying their lead. Darío Poveda’s second goal, a spectacular chip shot from midfield over an advanced goalkeeper, was a highlight of the match.
The home team controlled the game from the outset, though Silves managed to threaten occasionally. The score was 1-1 at the break.
Silves finished the match with 10 players after Rofino Có received a red card for accumulating two yellow cards. Approximately 2,000 spectators attended the cup tie.
