Faced with the Delta variant, the efficacy of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines would drop to 66%

According to a study by the American health authorities, the effectiveness of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines would drop to 66% against the Delta variant.

The study, published this August 24 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, the US federal health agency), was carried out “in real conditions”, on workers “on the front line” (mostly health workers), mainly vaccinated with the two messenger RNA sera.

91% efficiency before DELTA

It therefore shows that from the moment the Delta variant became dominant (ie it represented more than 50% of cases), the efficacy of the vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna was 66%. By comparison, CDC research showed 91% effectiveness in preventing contamination between December 2020 and April 2021.

The US health authorities, however, specify that these figures must be interpreted “with caution”. Indeed, the efficacy is not necessarily directly related to the Delta variant, but “could also decrease as the time elapsed since vaccination increases”.

The authors also point to “the limited number of weeks of observation”, as well as the “few infections among the participants”, which in fact relativize the importance of the results. They also explain that the measures will be “continuously monitored” in order to be as close as possible to reality.

The CDC further adds that, although less significant, “the sustained two-thirds reduction in the risk of infection underscores the importance and continued benefits of vaccination against Covid-19.”

These figures illustrating the decline in vaccine efficacy, whether linked to time or to the arrival of the Delta variant, go in the direction of the administration of a third dose, desired by the French government and already implemented. place by some countries.

This Tuesday, August 24, the High Authority of Health recommended in a report to provide this third dose to over 65 years and to people at risk of severe forms. This recall could take place as early as September for the most fragile.
