Sometimes, a race weekend feels like a missed opportunity, even when you show flashes of brilliance. That’s exactly how the Formula 3 Hungarian Grand Prix likely felt for Portuguese rookie Ivan Domingues. He finished 24th in Sunday’s main race at the Hungaroring track in Budapest.
The Feature Race unfolded on a wet track, making things tricky right from the start. We saw incidents early on, which brought out the safety car twice. Domingues, who had started 22nd, was doing well. He spent most of the race inside the top 20, holding his own against more experienced drivers.
But then, racing can be a contact sport. Domingues had a collision with MatÃas Zagazeta. This forced him to make an unscheduled pit stop to replace his car’s front wing. Dropping to the very back of the pack is tough, but he pushed hard. He managed to recover a few positions, climbing back to 24th by the checkered flag. This result didn’t truly reflect his speed. In fact, he clocked the fastest lap during Saturday’s sprint race. Talk about a mix of highs and lows!
“After the contact in Saturday’s race, this Sunday we again had an incident,” Domingues said after the race. “That made it even harder to gain positions. This weekend in Hungary was certainly not our best. Now we will use the summer break to recharge. We will get ready for the last race of the season in September. The growth process continues, and we will definitely come back stronger.” Domingues also took a moment to congratulate another driver. “I want to say a word to Rafael Câmara for winning the title today. He had a great season, and he deserves huge congratulations.”
This race was the ninth of ten in the Formula 3 season. Brazil’s Rafael Câmara, driving for Trident, sealed the championship title. Domingues himself made headlines earlier this season by winning the sprint race at the Spanish Grand Prix. He’s one of 11 different winners in what has been a very competitive Formula 3 season. The world championship wraps up between September 5th and 7th, with the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
