F1 wants to introduce changes to the sprint format

Formula 1 is constantly evolving and is already considering some changes. The novelties would be applied in the sprint format, which was already introduced two seasons ago, and whose configuration is to be further refined. The team bosses are happy so far and will discuss the adjustments at the next F1 Commission meeting, originally scheduled for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Stefano Domenicali has spoken in an interview with motorsport about the great change that he intends to introduce. The current president of the competition indicates that the main novelty would be the introduction of a reward for the pilots who dominate the weekend. “There is a proposal that I would like to make, in line with the concept of the ‘Grand Slam’ or ‘Grand Chelem‘. It is that the drivers who get the two pole positions and the two victories during the weekend are recognized with something extra”, comments the Italian. It is just an idea and would have to be approved by the teams.

Domenicali also announced how many Grands Prix will feature the sprint format. “there will be six, and I think we will announce them in September. We have a Formula 1 Commission meeting scheduled for the Belgian Grand Prix weekend,” he confirms. Therefore, the current number would be maintained.

More changes for the sprint

This season, the sprint format weekends have changed the organization of the sessions. On Fridays, the first free practice session and qualifying for the race on Sunday are held. Saturdays are dedicated exclusively to sprinting. In the morning the “qualification” is held and in the afternoon the race. The Grand Prix closes with the traditional test on Sundays.

F1 is not only intended to introduce the “Grand Slam” concept, but other novelties will also be discussed. According to motorsportthe adjustments that would be being studied would affect tire allocation or if the parc fermé rules need to be changed, and even if the weekend format changes.

In this case, some teams would bet on changing the order of the classifications and the schedule of the short race as a novelty compared to the current format. Friday’s classification would decide the starting order of the sprint race, which would take place on Saturday morning. For his part, The traditional qualifying session for the Grand Prix would be held on Saturday afternoon, with the test taking place on Sunday afternoon.

A new change that, according to Domenicali, would not particularly affect the viewer. “We have analyzed that point. I think the risk is more related to loyal viewers, who have their own habits and customs, than to new fans, who are much more open to change”, he explains. Although he also clarifies that they intend to establish something recognizable and lasting. “There will be no big news in terms of format. We want to stabilize the six weekends with sprint races and respect the habits of lifelong fans”.
