F1 Drivers Leclerc, Sainz Share Rented Car Home After Baku Storm Diverts Flight

The roar of Formula 1 engines had just faded in Baku. For Charles Leclerc, the trip home was supposed to be a simple flight. Instead, a nasty storm brewing over Southern France threw a wrench into his plans. The Ferrari star was headed for Nice. But his plane couldn’t touch down.

His flight veered sharply, landing not in France, but across the border in Italy. Stranded, the Monaco native needed a way home. A rental car became his only option. That’s where a familiar face unexpectedly entered the picture.

Leclerc quickly turned his phone into a camera. He shared a video on social media. There, behind the wheel of their rented ride, sat none other than Carlos Sainz. A grin spread across Leclerc’s face. “After a difficult weekend in Baku,” he confessed with a chuckle, “I thought this couldn’t get any worse…” Sainz just kept driving.

It’s a surprising reunion for two drivers. They used to be close teammates. That was until last season. Ferrari decided to bring in Lewis Hamilton. This meant Sainz left for Williams. The Baku race itself saw different fortunes for them. Sainz celebrated his first podium with Williams, finishing a strong third. Only George Russell was ahead of him from his new team. Meanwhile, Leclerc had a tougher Sunday, only managing ninth place.

From battling for positions on the track to navigating traffic in a shared rental. It’s a reminder that even for the biggest names in sports, sometimes the journey home is the real adventure.
