Liverpool FC have shown keen interest in signing midfielder Exequiel Palacios from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. However, according to a report by The Athletic, the German club have clarified that the Argentine player is not for sale. Nonetheless, Manchester United have also shown interest in the Argentina international.
Bayer Leverkusen managing director Simon Rofles has made it clear to interested clubs that Palacios is not available and described him as a “defensive genius”. Although Liverpool have shown interest in the player, it seems that the German club currently have no intention of letting him go. Although Liverpool have been looking to strengthen their midfield, the team’s renewal in that position appears to have been completed this summer.
Exequiel Palacios, target of a Premier League giant
Interest in Palacios may have paralleled the team’s commitments to Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Moreover, with the signing of Wataru Endo, Liverpool seem to have solved all their problems at this position. Bayer Leverkusen would likely be hoping for a big win for Palacios having paid around £15million for his signing in 2020.
It took the 24-year-old a while to get used to German football but he is now a key player in coach Xabi Alonso’s plans. Although Liverpool remain interested in Palacios, it’s possible the signing could materialize in the next few windows of the transfer. Although Liverpool’s midfield looks satisfactory at the start of this season, it is likely to need work in the long run.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have got off to a good start in the Premier League and are hoping for a successful year. To sum up, Liverpool have shown interest in signing Exequiel Palacios from Bayer Leverkusen however the German club have made it clear that the player is not up for sale at this time. Although Liverpool have completed the remodeling of their midfield, interest in Palacios could suggest the club are looking at long-term options. We’ll have to wait and see if Liverpool manage to sign the Argentinian player in future transfer windows.
