Ex-NFL QB Mark Sánchez Stabbed in Indianapolis, Faces Felony Assault Charge

Late-night chaos erupted in downtown Indianapolis, involving former NFL quarterback Mark Sánchez. A local bartender, Scott Bennett, saw the dramatic aftermath firsthand. He shared details of the intense moments after Sánchez was stabbed, revealing that the injured football analyst believed he had been shot.

Bennett was locking up Loughmiller’s Pub and Eatery. It was just after 12:30 AM on Saturday, October 4th. Suddenly, a figure appeared outside, banging on the glass and desperately asking for help. Bennett told FOX59 News that this person was the 38-year-old Sánchez.

“Someone was hitting the window when I was closing,” Bennett recalled. “I thought it was just some random person. I went to the window and realized he truly needed help. I went outside. The person was covered in blood and said he had been shot. We helped him lie down, called 911, and put towels on his wounds.”

Bennett added, “There was definitely blood, but it wasn’t gushing. It was around his chest and abdomen. I tried to get his name, but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. I didn’t recognize him at all.”

Police later confirmed the injured man was indeed Sánchez. He had suffered several stab wounds to his upper body. This came after a fight with a 69-year-old truck driver, identified in court papers as P.T. The incident happened near the Westin Hotel and the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, around 12:30 AM.

Authorities explain the argument started when Sánchez approached P.T.’s grease collection truck. The truck was parked behind the Marriott. Sánchez supposedly claimed a hotel manager told him the truck needed to move. P.T. was there to pick up used cooking oil. He reportedly refused to leave the spot.

Moments later, things quickly got worse. P.T. told police that Sánchez began yelling and tried to get into his truck’s cab. This happened even though he was told to go away. “He kept attacking me,” P.T. told officers. “I thought this guy was trying to kill me.”

The driver said he first used pepper spray to defend himself. But Sánchez kept attacking. So, P.T. pulled out a knife and stabbed him multiple times. He stated it was self-defense. When police arrived, they found Sánchez bleeding heavily. P.T. was nearby, with cuts on his face. Both men were taken to a local hospital for medical care.

According to documents reviewed by the entertainment publication Us Weekly, P.T. told detectives a crucial detail. He wasn’t wearing his hearing aids when the confrontation started. This might have caused confusion when Sánchez first approached him.

An affidavit stated, “P.T. did not have his hearing aids in because his truck makes a lot of noise when he’s swapping out the hotel’s frying oil. So he had to get close to Mr. Sánchez to hear him.” The document also noted, “When P.T. got close, he said that Mr. Sánchez smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words.”

Sánchez was initially charged with three minor offenses: battery causing injury, public intoxication, and illegally entering a motor vehicle. However, prosecutors announced a more serious charge on Monday, October 6th. The former quarterback now faces a Level 5 felony for battery that involved serious bodily injury. This upgraded charge could mean a prison sentence of one to six years.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey made it clear that Sánchez would not receive any special treatment. “I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what you do, I don’t care where you live,” Bailey stated during a press conference on Monday, October 6th. “If you come to our city and commit violent acts, we will use every tool we have to hold you accountable. We are fortunate no one died in this incident.”

Sánchez’s first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7th, at 8:30 AM.
