Ex-NFL Players’ Murder-Suicides: CTE and Football Blamed

The sports world often celebrates triumphs. But sometimes, it stares into a chilling abyss. A recent, tragic event has cast a grim echo across the landscape of American football. Shane Devon Tamura, a former player, murdered four people before taking his own life. This shocking case immediately brings to mind a very similar tragedy from April 2021.

Phillip Adams murdered five people in 2021

Back then, Phillip Adams, 32 years old, and a former NFL player, was at the center of a horrific incident in South Carolina. He killed five people. Among the victims were Dr. Robert Lesslie, 70, and his wife, Barbara Lesslie, 69. Their grandchildren, Adah Lesslie, 9, and Noah Lesslie, 5, also died. A 38-year-old employee of a boiler company was killed as well. Adams then committed suicide shortly after the killings. It was a close-knit community; Adams’ parents lived near Dr. Lesslie’s home, and the doctor had even treated Adams himself.

Both of these terrible events share a disturbing link. Shane Devon Tamura, 27, left a suicide note. In it, he pointed fingers directly at the NFL. He claimed the league was responsible for one of his diagnosed conditions: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE. This brain disease is tied to repeated head trauma. Disturbingly, Phillip Adams also showed signs of a similar clinical problem.

The pain from these tragedies runs deep. Alonzo Adams, Phillip’s father, spoke to local television station WCNC. Alonzo, a former San Francisco 49ers player, placed the blame squarely on American football. He shared how his son had left his own home to live with his parents. “He was a good boy,” Alonzo Adams said, his words heavy with grief. “I think American football ruined my son. I don’t believe he ever harmed anyone.” His gut-wrenching quote serves as a powerful, unsettling statement. It forces us to ask tough questions about the game and its lasting impact on those who play it.
