Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects the bones and soft tissue, has been given a second wave of visibility after a young girl who has been fighting the disease for four years held the Euro Cup trophy in a recent celebration. The disease, which usually starts around the bones of the leg or pelvis, affects approximately 30 people per year in Spain and has a 50% survival rate among children and 56% in adults.
Symptoms of Ewing’s Sarcoma
Among the most common symptoms of Ewing’s sarcoma are pain and swelling in the affected area, as well as generalized bone pain, fever, fatigue, and weight loss.
Research and Treatment
Years ago, a group of Spanish researchers analyzed the role of the tumor suppressor gene Sprouty-1 in the development of Ewing sarcoma, as well as the therapeutic implications of this discovery. This gene acts as a tumor suppressor and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of these tumors, according to the study.
Farewell to Elena
Personalities from all walks of life came together to say goodbye to Elena Huelva, a 20-year-old influencer who died in January 2023 due to Ewing’s sarcoma. Manuel Carrasco, Ana Obregón, Aitana, and Sara Carbonero were among those who dedicated emotional messages to Elena, who they credited with changing their lives. Ana Obregón promised to continue funding cancer research and to take care of Elena’s mother and sister.
