Unified Charging Standard Now in Effect
As of December 28, a new rule has been implemented, requiring all mobile phones and small electronic devices to use USB-C type chargers.
This change is part of a broader effort to reduce electronic waste, which has been on the rise in recent years, with approximately 11,000 tons of waste generated in 2023.
Devices Affected by the New Standard
The new regulation applies to a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, headphones, digital cameras, headsets, portable video game consoles, and portable speakers that can be recharged via a cable.
All of these devices must now be equipped with a USB-C port, regardless of the manufacturer. However, laptops are exempt from this standard until April 2026.
Consumer Options and Support
Buyers will have the option to purchase new electronic equipment with or without a charging device.
For those still using older devices, electronics retailers are reassuring them that they will continue to stock a variety of connections, ensuring that they can still find compatible chargers and accessories.
“We will continue to have all kinds of connections in stock, so there’s no problem for anyone with an old device,” says Miguel Lago, manager of an electronics store.
This new standard aims to provide comfort, economic savings, and waste reduction, and appears to be well-received by consumers and retailers alike.
