European Championship: Portugal’s Rivals and Schedule Revealed for Next Year’s Tournament.

Portugal’s men’s handball team is set to face tough competition at the upcoming European Championship. The team, led by coach Paulo Jorge Pereira, has been drawn into Group B alongside Denmark, North Macedonia, and Romania.

Denmark, the current world champions, will host some of the matches. They knocked Portugal out of the World Cup this year in the semifinals. Romania, which finished as one of the top third-placed teams in the qualifying groups, will also be a strong opponent. North Macedonia, which reached the fifth spot in 2012, rounds out the group.

Portugal’s Road to the European Championship

Portugal secured its ninth appearance in the European Championship by topping Group 8 in the qualifying round. The team finished fourth in the 2025 World Cup. They were joined by Romania in the final stage after finishing first in their qualifying group.

The European Championship will be co-hosted by Denmark, Sweden, and Norway from January 15 to February 1 next year. Portugal’s first-round matches will be held in Herning, Denmark.

Competition Format

The 24 teams participating in the championship have been divided into six groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the main round. If Portugal progresses, they will face teams from Group A and Group C.

  • Group A includes Germany, Spain, Austria, and Serbia
  • Group C features France, Norway, Czech Republic, and Ukraine

The stage is set for an exciting tournament, with several strong teams vying for the top spot. As the European Handball Federation put it, “Which team will be crowned as #ehfeuro2026 champion?”
