Europe Turns to Mexico for Renewable Energy as US Falls Behind in Sustainability Efforts

Mexico is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy, catching the attention of the European Union. The EU has shifted its focus from the US to Mexico, partnering with the Mexican government to drive sustainable energy policies.

A New Partnership

The EU and Mexico’s Ministry of Energy joined forces to discuss Mexico’s energy agenda and create a plan to boost the country’s renewable energy use. European officials acknowledged Mexico’s progress, noting that the country’s energy policies began taking shape just 10 years ago. The current administration has several projects underway that will help Mexico meet its Paris Agreement commitments and increase its use of non-fossil fuel technologies for electricity generation to 35%.

The EU-Mexico trade agreement includes a new energy chapter, enabling both parties to collaborate on clean energy projects. This partnership is expected to be formalized through a ratification process by both parliaments, giving it legal weight.

A Shift Away from the US

The EU’s decision to partner with Mexico comes as a response to the US’s changing energy landscape. Under Joe Biden, the US made significant strides in renewable energy, with a 47% increase in energy storage capacity and 135 new solar, wind, and storage projects across 24 states. However, Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency has raised concerns about the country’s energy future. Trump has expressed a preference for fossil fuels over clean energy, announcing plans to increase oil and gas production and reduce wind energy projects.

As a result, the EU has chosen to strengthen its ties with Mexico, which shares its commitment to sustainable energy. Mexico now has the opportunity to demonstrate its dedication to renewable energy, proving that it is a more reliable partner than the US in this area.

The EU and Mexico are working together to achieve their renewable energy goals. The partnership involves cooperation on energy projects and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Mexico’s progress in renewable energy is seen as a positive step towards a more sustainable future.
