EuroLeague Expansion Talks Continue Without Decision as Real Madrid and Barcelona Remain Absent

The Euroliga shareholders didn’t approve the BC Partners deal to buy a minority stake. Nikos Stathopoulos’ proposal got a thumbs up, but a decision was put off till May 12 in Barcelona. That’s when they’ll discuss expanding the league from 18 to 20 teams and finalize the BC Partners acquisition.

The EuroLeague is set to announce new long-term deals. So far, ten clubs have signed 10-year contracts with IMG. These clubs include the Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Žalgiris, Baskonia, Anadolu Efes, Olimpia Milano, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow, and Fenerbahçe. Notably, Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the four clubs that haven’t signed yet, and they skipped the last meeting.

Kamil Novak, FIBA Europe’s Secretary-General, presented the NBA’s European market entry plan to EuroLeague clubs. The plan is to bring the NBA to Europe, and the EuroLeague is considering how to fit into this new landscape.
