The European Commission released an 18-page report on preparing for the unexpected. It says Europe is facing a new reality, full of risks and uncertainties. The war between Russia and Ukraine, rising tensions, and cyberattacks are all major concerns.
Citizens across the continent should have practical plans in place to ensure they’re ready for emergencies. This includes having enough food and supplies to last at least 72 hours. People should also be encouraged to be self-sufficient and adaptable.
This warning seems to be a wake-up call for EU member states to realize their security situation. The ongoing threat from Russia has led many European leaders to emphasize the need to prepare for war. The US government, under President Donald Trump, has taken a confrontational approach to Europe, particularly on NATO’s budget and aid to Ukraine. This has prompted European countries to prepare their own military defenses.
The report also calls for teaching “preparedness” lessons in school, including skills to combat false or misleading information. “The new reality requires a new level of preparedness in Europe,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. “Our citizens, member states, and businesses need the right tools to prevent crises and respond quickly when disaster strikes.”
