EU grants 37 million euros to 16 Spanish center projects

The relationship between climate change and economic development, pubertal changes in obesity or field sensors with exceptional energy resolution. These are some of the Spanish investigations that will receive funding in the so-called Advanced Grant 2022, from the European Research Council (ERC).

The European Union granted Spain 16 research projects and funding of 37 million euros in this edition. It is the third country with the most hosted programs, which will take place in universities and study centers.

These grants are intended for researchers with relevant achievements in the last decade. Its main objective is to promote cutting-edge studies in the most diverse areas, such as physics, medicine, social sciences and humanities.

They have a budget of 544 million euros in aid and hope to create more than 2,000 jobs for postdoctoral students

In total, the Advanced Grant 2022 call has a budget of 544 million euros in aid and is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs for postdoctoral students through this call. This edition of the call received 1,650 proposals, with a success rate of 13.2%. 37.9% of awarded projects are led by women.

In the case of Spain, the researchers made 23% of the proposals and will lead 25% of the awarded projects. In this European call, the success rate for researchers in Spanish institutions was 10.2% and 14.8% for female researchers.

The so-called Advanced Grant for this year 2023 ends on May 23 and will have a total budget of 597 million. The Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the European Office of the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation, supports the preparation of proposals and interviews that are presented to the European Research Council through the work of its National Contact Points.

UK research team

The Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom allows the latter to be associated with the current EU research and innovation funding programme, Horizon Europe, subject to the adoption of a protocol, but as this has not yet been adopted, the British state is still considered “non-associated”.

Therefore, selected proposals from applicants based in a country in the process of partnering with Horizon Europe will only be eligible for funding if the relevant partnership agreement is applicable at the time of signature of the grant agreement. However, successful applicants from UK host institutions may still receive funding, provided they transfer to a host institution in an eligible country.
