Etna, a famous Italian volcano, erupted massively on June 2, 2025. It spewed ash and rocks into the air. Tourists ran down the mountain.
The eruption was the strongest in years. It shot ash and gas high into the air. People in nearby towns could see it.
A tour guide, Giuseppe Panfallo, recorded a video. It showed his group rushing down the mountain. A huge cloud of ash was behind them. “Everything happened at once,” Panfallo said. “A massive cloud and a loud roar.”
Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It’s a popular tourist spot. Over 1.5 million people visit each year. They can go near the top, even though it’s active.
The Eruption
The eruption started around 1 am local time. It made a loud noise that people in nearby towns could hear. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said it was the strongest eruption since 2014.
The volcano spewed out ash and rocks. Some parts of the crater collapsed. INGV said the ash wouldn’t reach the nearby city of Catania. But the mayor, Enrico Tarantino, warned people to be ready in case the wind changed.
Airports and Roads
Airports near the volcano stayed open. They weren’t affected by the ash. But officials told planes to avoid the area. They also closed roads to the volcano to keep people away.
The eruption was so strong that it could be seen from many towns on the island of Sicily. People were amazed and a little scared. The volcano is a popular spot, but it’s also very powerful.
