A hard-fought goalless draw, a single point snatched on the road. That was the story for Estrela da Amadora recently. They faced Santa Clara in Ponta Delgada, in the faraway Azores, for their fourth match in the Liga Portugal Betclic. Coach José Faria, a man who sees beyond the score, knew exactly what his team was up against.
“Coming here is never a walk in the park for anyone,” Faria stated after the game. He knew Santa Clara had a top-notch squad. Their coach is excellent, and their team is very well-drilled. They built their project over time, bringing in strong players to compete at the highest level. Estrela da Amadora understood this challenge even before they arrived.
Getting to the Azores is an adventure in itself, adding another layer of difficulty. The team had to catch the first flight of the morning the day before the match. Some players were up as early as 4:30 AM, others by 5:00 AM. That’s a brutal start to any day, let alone one before a tough away game. Then there’s the island itself, with its unique humidity and weather. It creates a “microclimate” that can really wear players down.
The game itself mirrored these challenges for a long stretch. It felt locked, with neither side creating many clear chances. Faria recalled one cross and a shot from Santa Clara in the first half. He believed a moment of individual brilliance or a set play might decide the outcome. Estrela da Amadora struggled to carve out the opportunities they wanted before the break.
Things picked up for Estrela in the second half. They held onto the ball more often, showing better control. Yet, that final pass, that last touch in front of goal, sometimes missed the mark. Despite limited options on his bench, Faria stands by his players. “We prepare with the ones we have, and I trust every single one of them,” he affirmed.
