Estoril ATP: Báez reached the quarterfinals

The tennis player Sebastián Báez won a great victory this Thursday over the Croatian Marin Cilic, former number 3 in the world, by 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Estoril, which is part of the European tour on brick dust and will distribute prizes of 597,900 euros.

Báez, ranked 59th in the ATP world ranking, beat Cilic -current number 23 in the world and third favorite in the Lusitanian tournament- in one hour and 50 minutes of play. It was the best victory for Báez, who had beaten the Chilean Cristian Garin (18th in the ranking) this year at the Córdoba Open, on the circuit, due to the magnitude of the rival, since Cilic -33 years old- not only reached being 3 in the world but he won 20 ATP titles including one Grand Slam, the US Open 2014.

The 21-year-old from Buenos Aires will face Frenchman Richard Gasquet (80) in the quarterfinals this Friday, who eliminated Bolivian Hugo Dellien (85) 7-6 (5) and 6-2. Báez never faced Gasquet, 35 years old and 15 ATP titles.

Báez appeared in the Portuguese competition last Tuesday with a good victory over the local Joao Sousa (83 and champion in Estoril in the 2018 edition), and in his second game he left Cilic out.

The top favorite for the title in Estoril is the Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime (9), while the second was the Argentine Diego Schwartzman (15), but last Tuesday he decided to withdraw from the tournament to preserve his physique with a view to the next Masters 1000 in Madrid and Rome.
