Estefanía Fernández gives Spain its third gold in Szeged

The Spanish Estefanía Fernández achieved this Sunday, in K1 5,000, the third gold for Spain in the World Cup of sprint canoeing held in Szeged (Hungary), on the last day of which Cayetano García and Pablo Martínez were fourth in the C2 500 final and María Corbera finished sixth in the C1 500.

Fernández, who already celebrated silver in the K4 500, did a time of 24:05.82, followed by the Swedish Melina Andersson (24:18.08) and the Hungarian Vanda Kiszli (24.30.45). The other Spanish participant in the final, Begoña Lazkano, finished in fifth position (24:45.77). The gold of the Extremaduran paddler put an end to the participation of the Spanish team in the World Cup in the Hungarian channel of Szeged, where he has won seven medals -three gold, four silver and one bronze-, as well as another silver in paracanoe. Spain finishes second in the medal table, surpassed only by Hungarythe host team with 11 and ahead of Romania with 3.

In the final day of this Sunday, Cayetano García and Pablo Martínez, current C2 500 world championsthey were two hundredths away from getting on the podium finishing in fourth position, after being surpassed in the last few meters by the Italians Gabriele Casadei and Carlo Tacchini. The Andalusians used a time of 1:41.82, and were 85 hundredths behind the Hungarians David Korisanszky and Adam Fokete (1:40.96), who prevailed to win the gold ahead of the Poles Aleksander Kitewski and Norman Zezula (1: 41.31).

In C1 500, María Corbera from Madrid was unable to win her third medal in the competition and finished in sixth place, with a time of 2:09.13, 4.78 behind Canadian Katie Vincent (2:024.34). The silver went to the Chilean María Mailliard (2:05.88, at 1.54) and the bronze to the Cuban Yarisleidis Duboys (1:08.17, at 3.83). Corbera was world champion last year in Halifax (Canada) in C1 200 and bronze in C1 5,000 and in the Munich Europeans he was gold in C1 500 and in C1 5,000, a distance in whose final he did not participate today.

In paracanoe, Araceli Menduiña also finished this day sixth in the KL3 200 final, with a time of 51.36, 3.17 behind the French Nelia Barbosa, who won clearly (48:18). Menduiña, coach of Olympic medalists David Cal and Teresa Portela at the beginning of their careers, could not emulate David Gonzálezwho on Friday achieved silver in the VL1 200 meter test.

The two pairs of K2 500, Marcus Cooper and Rodrigo Germade and Carlos Arévalo and Saúl Craviotto, who did not get into final A yesterday, were relegated to final Cin which the first ones made the best time (1:32.83) and the second ones the fifth (1:36.42), 3.59 behind the winners.
