Espanyol, the ‘youngest’ team

In the first categories of Spanish football, from LaLiga Santander to the Second RFEF, recently created, there is only one team whose age measure does not reach 20 years. A true youth, with assiduous players like Roger Martínez, only 17. He is Espanyol B, which according to the Transfermakrt portal his average is 19.9 years. It is the bet of the sports management of Francisco Rufete: “We want to accelerate processes, and that the players already feel that difficulty”, recently commented in a presentation of his project in Sant Adrià.

Obviously, the subsidiaries are the teams with the lowest average age. The second on this list is Real Madrid Castilla, which is one category higher than the Espanyol subsidiary, and whose average is 20.1. Barcelona stands at 20.8, although in the first team it has players who barely reach 21 years of age such as Ansu Fati, Nico González, Gavi, Eric García or Pedri.

“In grassroots football, the context is normally that of a dominant team, so if these players are promoted to a category such as the Second RFEF, they encounter other situations,” they recently commented from the sports department. The project already started the previous campaign when the results did not follow and the Blue and Whites fell when new categories were created. Now they are in fourth place in Spanish football. They also dispensed with coach José Aurelio Gay and bet on Luis Blanco, until then in Juvenil A.

In this second team are very young footballers, of youthful age. Apart from Roger Martínez, there are other players like Omar El Hilali, 18 years old, and that already the previous year he made the preseason with the first team with just 16 and debuted in LaLiga SmartBank with 17. This campaign, two players have made their debut with the first team due to the circumstances of the squad at the beginning of the course: Lluís Recasens and Gori.
