In an energetic demonstration, thousands of environmental protesters block a highway in the Netherlands. The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the importance of taking urgent action to address the climate crisis and protect our planet.

This mass mobilization shows growing support for environmental initiatives and highlights the need for governments and companies to take sustainable action to ensure a greener future.

During a collective protest, demonstrators were dispersed with water cannons. Among those arrested was Carice van Houten, a well-known actress from the series “Game of Thrones”.

Environmental protesters against fossil fuel subsidies

Last Saturday, a protest led by the environmental collective Extinction Rebellion took place in The Hague, Netherlands. During the demonstration, thousands of people blocked a main road to express their dissatisfaction with fossil fuel subsidies. Actions like this highlight the growing movement against non-renewable fuels and for a more sustainable future.

According to the environmental organization, around 25,000 people took part in the demonstration. However, a spokesman for the Dutch city’s city council reported that between 10,000 and 12,000 people were in attendance.

Demonstrators have been blocking the Utrechtsebaan section of the A12 motorway in the center of The Hague since early afternoon. It is important to note that this area is where the seat of government is located.

During a demonstration, an AFP journalist witnessed police trying to disperse demonstrators with water cannons. Several protesters, including actress Carice van Houten, best known for her role as “Melisandre” in the series “Game of Thrones,” were arrested.

A lot of money is being pumped in the wrong direction. Those who use the most fossil fuels receive the most subsidies“Lamented Katrien Joosten, 46, an architect who took part in the demonstration with her 13-year-old son.

Authorities are concerned about the possible consequences of closing the highway as it could lead to heavy traffic jams. This road is an important access road to The Hague. Notably, Dutch security forces arrested more than a thousand demonstrators at a similar protest last month.
