Enric Mas: “Hopefully a podium, we have a good opportunity”

At 28, Enric Mas faces his fifth Tour de France, the fourth in the ranks of Movistar, and will do so again as leader of the ranks. Before starting the race, the Spaniard spoke to the media, commenting on his aspirations and feelings before leaving Bilbao on Saturday. Meanwhile, the team is staying in Vitoria, “in a classic Itzulia climate”, especially due to the rain. “I will have a feeling of satisfaction in Paris if I don’t give myself a gram of strength during these weeks, give everything and hopefully a podium, for myself and for the team. We have a good opportunity, ”says the man from Arta. In his last performance before this Tour, the Dauphiné, he was far from the best: “It was a disaster. I didn’t feel well and we found the reason, which was stomach problems that, after the race, I went home and was on with it. I had a breakdown but we’re back.”

On paper, both Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar start as the two great favorites for the final victory: “We hope to take advantage of the rivalry between them. Things can always happen and there are bad days. The Spanish fans are looking forward to it, both with me, with Landa, with Carlos Rodríguez… hopefully we can have a good race”. Regarding the route, Enric stressed that it is to his liking: “It is a tough and attractive route, like other years, but there is little time trial (only 22 km) and it will also be with demanding terrain. In the first days we have to really see the physical condition in which we arrive”.

One of the best moments of Enric Mas took place in the final part of the 2022 season, after his second place in La Vuelta and later, in the Italian classics, going head-to-head with Pogacar and even beating him in one of them.: “I feel good, inside me I have a different sensation, better than in La Vuelta and in the Italian classics. The Danes had the advantage last year when they left home, and that’s what I think about us this year, because we will be on the roads we trained on”. On the Tour, Mas will have Muhlberger, Pedrero, Izagirre, Aranburu, Jorgenson, Guerreiro and Oliveira as teammates. “I had nothing to do with the team’s decision. There were up to eleven riders on the possible list to be on the Tour, which speaks of the good level. I will try to fight for the general and the team will also try to get into the breakaways”, concluded Mas.
