England Seeks to End 29-Year Drought at The British Open
England has been without a champion at The British Open since Nick Faldo won the tournament in 1992, but this year may be the year the drought is broken. Justin Rose, who has come close to winning on multiple occasions, is one of the contenders.
Rose, a former world number one, has had a successful career, winning numerous titles including the US Open and Olympic Games. Despite his achievements, he was forced to rely on qualifying tournaments to secure a spot in this year’s Open.
In fact, Rose is the second most participating player in the field without a win, trailing only Adam Scott. He has finished in the top 10 on three occasions at the British Open, including a second-place finish in 2018.
Rose’s story at The British Open is a long one. He won the Silver Medal in his tournament debut at Royal Birkdale in 1998, awarded to the best amateur in the tournament. He finished fourth that year and has since been determined to break his duck.
"The Open has been something of a fairy tale and a love story for me since I was 14 and made it to the final qualifier at Scotscraig (1995)," Rose said after qualifying at Burnham & Berrow. The 41-year-old is hoping this year will be the one where he finally gets his hands on the Claret Jug.
Rose has been hailed by the Scottish public, who recognize his contributions to the European Ryder Cup team. This year, he is seen as one of the main contenders to bring an end to England’s 29-year drought. Will he be the one to do it?
