Energy and Mines on electricity rate increase: “That 9% will mean between 100 and 140 additional pesos”

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte, confirmed this Thursday that as of today, there will be a 9% increase in the electricity rate.

Although he specified that the body defined by law as responsible for making rate adjustments in the country is the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE), the official explained that this increase will be reflected in those homes where up to 300 kilowatt hours per month are consumed.

“That 9% is going to mean between 100 and 140 additional pesos in the amount that citizens pay,” Almonte said when interviewed on the “El Día” program, a television program that is broadcast daily on Telesistema, Channel 11.

Responding to a question from the journalist Edith Febles, who questioned the public servant about the reasons for this measure, Almonte stated that “it is an increase that is occurring every three months as a consequence of the sequential adjustment of the tariff according to the electricity pact signed by all the sectors”.

He also clarified that although a change in the amount of the rate was arranged, there are also other factors that affect the growth of the price that Dominicans pay for energy, and one of them is the increase in consumption.

In summer consumption increases, and therefore the size of the bill (…) the more energy you consume, the more you have to pay”, he explained.

The head of Energy and Mines added that “when you perceive a rise in the bill It’s not always because of a rate increase but because of an increase in spending.”

The official also said on television that the increase in the price of the electricity rate is closely linked to the price of fuel.

The electricity we consume is produced by fuelthe fuel determines more than 60% of the price of each kilowatt and it turns out that the price of coal a year or so ago was between 60 and 70 dollars a ton, and has gradually shot up to 400 dollars a ton at times,” he explained. .

However, he pointed out that despite the measure that increases the electricity rate by 9%, the Government “has made every effort to protect the population of a disproportionate and sudden increase in the bill through subsidies”.
