Emmanuel Macron announces major vaccination campaigns in schools

Emmanuel Macron is moving forward. The Head of State announced “large vaccination campaigns” against Covid-19 in schools, starting at the beginning of the school year.

“For the university, high school and students, it will be possible to get vaccinated in the course facilities,” he said on the occasion of the health defense council on August 11. “Our goal is the vaccination of all French people who can be vaccinated”, that is, those over 12 years old without medical contraindications.

Emmanuel Macron thus confirms the statements of the Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, who announced at the end of July the opening of “6,000 to 7,000 vaccination centers” near schools. He added that if, in a class, a high school student or high school student tested positive for the coronavirus, the vaccinated students could continue to attend face-to-face classes. On the other hand, unvaccinated students would be sent home for a week of distance learning. Jean-Michel Blanquer, accused of creating a health pass for schools, defended himself at the time, explaining that the goal was to keep schools open as long as possible, while promoting vaccination.

In France, vaccination is authorized for children under 12 years of age. But middle and high school students cannot get an injection on their own: the consent of at least one of their parents is required until the age of 16. Therefore, they must go to the vaccination center with a certificate completed and signed by one of their legal representatives. Beyond the age of 16, they are free to decide if they want to be vaccinated or not.

As of August 12, 49.6% of youth ages 12 to 17 had already received at least one dose of the vaccine. At the moment, this is the least vaccinated category of the population (except for those 0-12 years old, who do not have the right to vaccination except in special cases), but also the one that has had access to subsequent injections. Vaccination was opened to minors only on June 15. Therefore, the government has decided to postpone the application of the health pass until September 30 for all French people aged 17 and under.
