Emergency meeting of the Security Council due to the situation between Poland and Belarus

Estonia, France and Ireland have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the migration crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus, to be held on Thursday afternoon, diplomats told AFP.

The meeting will take place behind closed doors, indicated the same sources.

The tension continues between Poland and Belarus, supported by Russia and accused on Wednesday by Warsaw of practicing the "State terrorism".

"These situations should not be used for political reasons and become a cause of tension between states."UN spokesman St├ęphane Dujarric said during his daily press conference on Wednesday.

"The Secretary General (Antonio Guterres) follows with concern the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland"he added.

Guterres recalled "the importance of managing migration and refugee problems in accordance with humanitarian principles and international law", he pointed.

More than 2,000 migrants have been camping in freezing weather for several days in a wooded area where Poland installed a barbed wire fence and deployed no less than 15,000 soldiers to block their way.

Europeans have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for weeks of fueling the crisis by issuing visas to migrants and taking them to the border in revenge for European sanctions.
