Two types of fake accounts
In an official blog post, the company said, “We are permanently suspending millions of accounts that are automated or spam each month.” This is about two different types of fake accounts. On the one hand, there are bots, which are fully automated accounts. On the other hand, there are inauthentic accounts designed to help manipulate the platform.
†The challenge is that many accounts that look fake – are actually from real people”Agrawal said. Just because an account has a platform-generated username and profile picture, it doesn’t mean it isn’t managed by a real person.
“Some of the spam accounts that actually the most dangerous may appear perfectly legitimate at first glance.” he added.
Twitter has previously identified and banned more than 23,000 fake accounts operated by real people associated with the Chinese Communist Party as part of a propaganda network.
