Elon Musk Launches Starlink Mini in Mexico for Rural Internet Connectivity

It seems that Elon Musk has his sights set on Mexico, but not for the reason you might think. Despite his previous refusal to bring Tesla to the country, it appears that another one of his businesses has its eyes on the Mexican market. Musk, being one of the richest and most influential people in the world, has a multitude of projects under his belt, and this time he’s looking to bring technology to the most remote areas of Mexico.

Conquering Mexico with Satellite Internet

The project in question is Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet service, which is set to launch its Starlink Mini device in Mexico. This device, already available in countries like the US, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama, promises to bring high-speed connectivity and low latency to remote and hard-to-reach areas. Musk himself confirmed the arrival of the device through his X account, stating that the goal is to reach the largest number of users and allow them to work and play in remote places with high-speed internet.

The Starlink Mini is a compact and portable device that can be easily transported, making it ideal for travelers and those living in areas with little to no internet coverage. It’s capable of connecting up to 128 devices simultaneously, offering speeds of 50 to 100 megabytes per second and a latency of 23 milliseconds. This means that users can stream in 4K, engage in online gaming, and make video calls with a stable and fast connection.

What Makes Starlink Mini Special?

One of the main advantages of the Starlink Mini is its ability to reach remote areas where traditional internet services are not available. Its compact size, similar to that of a laptop, makes it easy to transport and set up. The device is also compatible with 5G networks and Starlink mesh systems, making it easy to connect in homes, offices, and even outdoors. The antenna is also designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including dust, heat, and snow, and can even operate underwater for up to 30 minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The Starlink Mini is available in Mexico for a price of 4,999 pesos, and can be purchased through the official Starlink page and authorized distributors like Liverpool, Office Depot, and Mercadolibre. The kit includes the antenna, a Wi-Fi modem, a stand, and a power source, among other accessories. Users will also need to subscribe to a service plan, with options starting at 800 pesos per month for the Lite residential plan and 1,045 pesos per month for the standard plan. Installation is designed to be user-friendly, with the Starlink app providing a “Search Obstructions” feature to help users find the optimal location for the device.

While Tesla may not be coming to Mexico, it seems that Musk has still found a way to make his mark on the country with Starlink Mini. This device has the potential to bring connectivity to remote areas and provide an internet option for those who need it most. As Musk’s opinion about the country seems to have changed recently, it will be interesting to see how this project develops and what other initiatives he may have in store for Mexico.
