Electric cars have the most American components

The US is home to a thriving automotive industry, with many cars boasting a high percentage of American-made parts. Interestingly, electric vehicles top the list of the most American-made cars. But what does that really mean?

To help buyers make informed decisions, Cars.com created the American-Made Index, which analyzes five key factors to determine how “American” a car or truck is. The website studied around 400 vehicles for 2025 and narrowed it down to the top 99. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ranking.

One surprising fact is that most cars aren’t entirely made in the US. Instead, they’re assembled from parts sourced from various locations around the world. The global nature of the automotive industry means that even cars sold in the US often have international components.

However, some models are more American than others. This year, Cars.com found that 60% of the top 10 most American-made vehicles are electric. This is notable, given the current political climate and efforts to cut funding for electric vehicle purchases.

Tesla leads the pack

Tesla dominates the top spots in the 2025 American-Made Index, with the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X taking the top four positions. The company has held the top spot since 2021.

Other notable mentions include the Hyundai and Kia brands, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Kia EV9 making the list thanks to their new factory in Georgia.

According to Cars.com, the top 10 most American-made cars for 2025 are:

  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model X
  • Jeep Gladiator
  • Kia EV6
  • Honda Ridgeline
  • Honda Odyssey
  • Honda Passport
  • Volkswagen ID.4

The number of foreign-made cars on the list has increased over the years. In 2021, 58% of the vehicles were from international brands, and that number has grown to 67% in 2025.

Electric vehicles on the rise

The Cars.com index highlights the growing trend of electrification in the automotive industry. This year, 11 electric vehicles made the list, up from just eight in 2024. Additionally, 19 hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are included, compared to 15 in 2024.

These numbers reflect the industry’s shift towards electric mobility, with many manufacturers investing heavily in electric vehicle technology. As the demand for eco-friendly cars continues to grow, it’s likely that we’ll see even more American-made electric vehicles on the roads in the future.
