Elections in Germany: Social Democrats win legislative elections with 25.7% of the vote

The Social Democratic Party won the parliamentary elections in Germany marking the end of the Merkel era with 25.7% of the vote, slightly ahead of the Conservatives, according to a provisional official tally announced by the Federal Election Commission on Monday.

The conservative CDU-CSU camp won 24.1% of the vote, the worst result in its history, while the Greens came third with 14.8% followed by the liberal FDP party with 11.5%.

From this Monday morning, the leaderships of the various parties likely to enter into a future coalition are meeting in Berlin and should give indications on the alliances they are considering.

The Conservatives had never fallen below the 30% threshold. This is a stinging setback for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s camp as she is due to retire from politics.
