Eibar Honors UEFA Champions League Winner Mikel Oyarzábal with Surprising Welcome

Mikel Oyarzábal is surprised in Eibar: his team welcomes the European champion with honours

Eibar Welcomes European Champion Mikel Oyarzabal with Warm Tribute

On June 1, 2024, Spain embarked on a journey towards becoming European champions again. Just 44 days later, the dream became a reality, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the winning goal against England. The Real Sociedad captain’s achievement has brought joy to his hometown of Eibar, where he was surprised with a special welcome.

Eibar Says Thank You

After celebrating the Euro Cup with fans at Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles, Oyarzabal returned to his hometown, where he was greeted by lifelong friends at his usual hairdresser’s salon. The group had prepared a huge banner, surrounded by flares, which read in Basque: "Congratulations Mikel, little one." The banner changed to "Congratulations Mikel, champion" as the footballer approached the group.

A Tribute from Childhood Friends

The welcome did not end there. As Oyarzabal approached the group, everyone began chanting behind the banner, leaving the footballer in awe. The tribute from his childhood friends put a big smile on his face as he acknowledged the recognition. The group started jumping to the rhythm of the song "Wild Filly" by Isabel Aaiún, which has become an anthem for the team.

A Nice Gesture from the Local Council

The local council in Eibar is planning to welcome Oyarzabal, one of its most illustrious residents, with a special ceremony. The footballer’s achievement has made him a symbol of pride for the town, having won the champion’s medal by beating top teams from around the world.

A Controversial Development in Elorrio

However, the welcome was overshadowed by a controversy that emerged in the Biscayan municipality of Elorrio, the town of Oyarzabal’s mother. Unknown individuals placed banners with defamatory messages against the footballer and his teammate, Merino, saying "No to the acceptance of the Spanish team" and labeling them as "traitors." The banners featured the Basque flag and a crossed-out swastika.
