Egypt Builds Barriers Along Gaza Border, But Why

Security Measures and Humanitarian Concerns in the Gaza-Egypt Border

The construction of the wall along the Gaza-Egypt border has been a topic of controversy since its inception in 2009. The wall, built by Egypt, was designed to improve security in the Sinai region and prevent smuggling and terrorist activities. The project was supported by the US and France, who provided assistance for its completion.

Design and Features of the Wall

The wall is approximately 10-11 kilometers long and extends 18 meters below the surface. It is equipped with steel structures, underground barriers, surveillance systems, cameras, and sensors to detect activity near the border. The wall has been effective in improving security in the Sinai region, although extremist attacks remain a challenge.

Humanitarian Concerns and Criticisms

However, the construction of the wall has been criticized by numerous groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and human rights organizations. The wall has been described as the “wall of death” and has been accused of exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The demolition of homes and smuggling tunnels on the border has also been criticized, with Human Rights Watch reporting that at least 3,255 buildings were demolished between 2013 and 2015.

Activists have denounced the wall as disproportionate and contrary to international humanitarian law, arguing that it hinders the entry of humanitarian aid and limits the freedom of movement of Gazans. The wall has also been criticized for its impact on the local economy and the lives of those living in the affected areas.

Rafah Pass and Additional Security Measures

The Rafah Pass, a border of approximately 13 kilometers, is the only entry and exit point into Gaza that is not controlled by Israel. However, in February 2024, images emerged of Egypt building another wall at the site. The construction of this additional wall has raised concerns about further restrictions on the movement of people and goods in the region.
