Eguibar goes for the Crystal Globe

“I think I have quite a few options. There are 48 points and nothing that takes several positions can be given. Obviously I have to do the two races better than Noerl, but I see it realistic”, he assured Lucas Eguibar, world cross country champion in Idre Fjäll (Sweden) 2021, before qualifying for Efe. The rider born in San Sebastián 29 years ago reached the final double date of Mont Sainte Anne (Canada) third overall, 48 points behind the German Martin Noerl and nine of the Italian Omar Visintin. Bearing in mind that winning each round grants 100 points (80 for the second, 60 for the third, 50 for the fourth, 45 for the fifth…) the Spaniard’s assault on the Crystal Globe is possible but he absolutely needs to be very high in the standings. In fact, there are nine athletes with the option of lifting it on Sunday.

Regarding the location, Eguibar defined it as a “tiny, but very good” station and “with an acceptable and comfortable temperature because here in January it is 50 below zero. Hopefully not too much snow will fall because it will slow down the track a lot.” The first step was to make a good classification to ensure being among the 32 that reach the qualifiers… and Eguibar shone. He was in after the first round with the fourth fastest time (56.56) just ahead of Noerl (56.74). and seeing how Visintin (58.98) was far behind (19th) in the round of 16 on Saturday (5:00 p.m., Eurosport). He led Canadian Eliot Grondin (55.98). Álvaro Romero, silver in the previous event in Switzerland, does not take part in this test.
