Edwin Moses: “Russia should stay out of Paris 2024”

the olympic legend Edwin Moses, President of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, he has been vocal about how the power of sport can be a potent element in defeating the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A well-known supporter of drug control and athletes’ rights throughout his career, Moses opposed the US boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a protest by President Jimmy Carter against the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. , but states that this time is different. In an interview with Laureus.com, he stated: “The 1980 boycott was political. This is just horrible. It doesn’t have much to do with politics, it has to do with humanity, war, the fighting, the children and innocent people dying, the rockets and missiles, the tanks… and it’s live on TV, so everyone is aware of it.”

Moses also believes that Russia should have been kicked out of the sport much sooner, even before the invasion of Ukraine, due to its sports doping offences. “I was in favor of excluding the Russians because of what happened in Sochi in 2014. For actually corrupting the integrity of the Olympics, through doping. I was on the executive committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency and I thought the penalties were too light.

“What they are doing to him right now in the Ukraine, it’s exactly the same thing they’ve done to the sport, in my opinion. Russia should be banned in Paris.” On Vladimir Putin, Moses recalls a meeting he had with the Russian president a few years ago. “Once I sat close to him. Two seats away, the translator was in the middle. And I talked to him all night. I know how he talked about sports, as if they were the Holy Grail, and how important sport was, and how good it was that the best from each country, regardless of their ideology, could compete together, and whoever wins, wins… I realize now that it was just propaganda.”
