ED Summons Urvashi Rautela, Ankush Hazra in Illegal 1xBet Betting Case

The world of glitz and glamour often meets the tough reality of legal battles. This week, popular Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela and Bengali actor Ankush Hazra found themselves in such a situation. They are now on the radar of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), facing questions about an illegal betting app.

Both celebrities have been called to the ED’s headquarters in Delhi. News agency ANI reported that they were asked to appear on September 16 for questioning. The main focus of this investigation is their connection to an illegal online betting platform called 1xBet.

The Web of Illegal Betting

This isn’t just about one app or two stars. The ED’s investigation uncovered a larger issue. Many online betting platforms are quietly spreading their business across the country, even though they are against the law. These companies often use big names from the entertainment and sports worlds to promote themselves. 1xBet is one such platform that has actively used famous faces in its ads and promotions. In fact, former Member of Parliament Mimi Chakraborty also received a summons from the ED for similar reasons.

The current probe isn’t the first time celebrities have been questioned. The ED has previously spoken with Bollywood actor Sonu Sood. Well-known cricket stars like Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina also faced similar inquiries. These past discussions aimed to understand the agreements and deals these famous personalities had with the betting companies. The authorities wanted to know the exact terms under which they associated with these firms.

How These Apps Deceive Users

Officials from the ED have explained how these illegal apps operate. They often start by presenting themselves as innocent, skill-based games. They try to get users hooked with exciting offers and, crucially, by featuring celebrities. This makes the apps seem trustworthy and fun.

However, the reality is much darker. The internal systems of these apps are rigged. They are designed for fraud, ensuring that users are at a disadvantage. Even when these apps are completely banned, they find clever ways to reach people. They often pop up through different websites and online channels, making it hard to stop them. This ongoing investigation highlights the challenges of cracking down on illegal online activities, especially when celebrity influence is involved.
